The Treadmill That Feels Like Progress
Why the fixing-yourself identity rewards you right up until it doesn't
I spent two years getting really good at finding what was wrong with me.
I learned to name my fears. I mapped my limiting beliefs. I could trace the exact moment a survival pattern kicked in and explain why it existed. I built an entire toolkit; nervous system regulation, breath work, talk therapy, pattern recognition and I used it daily. I was proud of it.
And I should have been. That season was necessary. I genuinely wasnât aware of the ways Iâd programmed myself to stay small. The work was real.
But hereâs what I didnât notice: somewhere along the way, fixing myself became my identity.
Not a phase. A baseline.
I got so fluent in self-development that I couldnât stop developing. Every moment of ease felt like a gap I should be filling. Every feeling of peace got interrogated. Iâd sit with a calm afternoon and my mind would start scanning for the next pattern, the next block, the next thing to dismantle.
I was never done. Because done wasnât part of the model.
This is the trap nobody warns you about. Self-awareness tools are powerful. They work. But if your only relationship to yourself is diagnostic, you will always find something broken. You will keep fixing a person who no longer needs to be fixed. And you will mistake that constant fixing for growth.
What shifted for me was noticing how insights actually land in my body when theyâre fully digested. Before digestion, a new perspective lives in my head. It takes up attention. I think about it constantly, try it on, revisit it. Thereâs tension around it. It feels urgent and alive.
But when Iâve truly integrated something, when itâs moved from concept to consciousness, it feels like nothing. It feels like âduh.â Like something everyone should already know. Thereâs no tension. No drama. It just is.
And I realized most of the insights I was still chewing on had already been swallowed. I was just addicted to the chewing.
The real evolution wasnât another layer of self-awareness. It was remembering what I actually am underneath all the repair work. Not broken. Not perpetually under construction. Just a person who had done enough excavation to finally build something.
What I started to see is that my relationship to everythingâwork, visibility, risk, creationâwas being filtered through the smaller version of myself. The one who needed fixing. I wasnât relating to my life from where I actually was. I was relating to it from where Iâd been.
This left me stuck in fear. Fear of what would happen if I chose to be biggerâŠ
I started to ask myself what if love and exploration dictated my life instead of fear? and my world opened.
I began experimenting with a different relationship. Not a relationship to less, to limitation, to whatâs wrong. A relationship to more. More responsibility. More authenticity. More of the thing that actually scares me, which isnât failure anymore itâs being seen as someone whoâs no longer broken. More so, itâs the fear of not knowing myself. The fear of being authentic because authenticity in itâs nature is polarizing and polarization means I repel some and attract others. That doesnât scream safety, it screams unknown, divisive, unsafe. So the fear of these big possibilities has kept me safe and small and I am so sick of it.
Thatâs the paradox of emotional readiness. You canât wait until you feel ready. Youâll never feel ready because your fix-it identity will always find one more thing to address first. But you do need capacity. The ability to hold whatever floods in when you step into the next version of yourself.
Capacity isnât calm. It isnât peace. Itâs the bandwidth to receive whatever comes and not collapse under it. I built that bandwidth during the fixing years. That was the whole point of them.
But capacity without movement is just a bigger container sitting empty.
Iâm not done with self-awareness. I still use the tools. Iâm building an appâNoticeâspecifically to direct my attention more intentionally throughout the day, to track my relationships to the things in my life and see where tension lives. (follow along here).
The difference is Iâm no longer using awareness to shrink. Iâm using it to expand.
The fixing got me here. But staying in it would keep me exactly where I am.

P.S. You are loved and you are enough.
